Spam, eggs and rice come together to make this delicious comfort food meal that’s ready in no more than 15 minutes!
Sometimes I just want a simple meal that’s quick to make and requires low-effort. This is that meal. A quick and easy spam and egg rice bowl is my go-to when I’m having comfort food cravings because these 3 ingredients complement each other perfectly. I like to eat this for breakfast, but it’s suitable for any time of day!
I often get conflicting comments from people whenever I post spam recipes. Why? Well… spam is not exactly considered a “health food”. Spam is high in sodium and a processed meat, but I do think it’s perfectly suitable as part of a healthy diet. Every food is ok in moderation – in my opinion, anyway. So, don’t go eating this every day, but definitely enjoy it every once in awhile!
History of Spam
Spam was first introduced in 1937, but it wasn’t until World War II that it gained worldwide popularity. This canned luncheon meat was easy to transport and had a long shelf-life, thus making it the perfect product to distribute during the war. Soldiers even sent hate mail to the CEO, complaining about eating spam up to 3 times per day!
Soon, spam made its way to the Asian Pacific where it became a staple item in the local cuisine. Korea, for example, uses spam in many of its dishes like budae jjigae and spam deopbap. There are even entire aisles dedicated to this canned lunch meat. I mean, I’ve never seen more varieties of spam than in Korea! Furthermore, spam is a popular luxury gift to give during traditional Korean holidays like Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). In the US, spam has the highest consumption in Hawaii which uses it for classic dishes like spam musubi and loco moco.
Spam was once known as a “struggle meal”, but not anymore. Many upscale restaurants have added it to their menu. So, there is a deep history to this beloved canned meat and it continues to evolve as chefs add their creative spin to it.
Ingredients
The ingredients for spam & egg rice bowl are quite simple and staple items I always have in my kitchen.
- Spam: I like to keep this recipe simple and use the Classic SPAM
- white rice: short-grain, or Japanese rice pairs great with spam. Click here for my favorite brand of Japanese rice!
- soy sauce: this is used with sugar to create a glaze on the spam
- sugar: I used white sugar, but feel free to substitute
- furikake: Japanese rice seasoning that gives extra flavor to plain white rice

Description
Spam, eggs and rice come together to make this delicious comfort food meal that’s ready in no more than 15 minutes!
Ingredients
- Classic SPAM
- Japanese rice
- 1:1 ratio of soy sauce and sugar
- furikake
Instructions
- First make sure your rice is cooked ahead of time because the spam and eggs cook very quickly.
- Cut the spam into ¼ inch slices. 1 can is enough to feed 2 – 3 people. Heat the spam over medium-high heat in a nonstick pan for about 1 minute. Add an equal ratio of soy sauce and sugar once the spam is slightly browned. The amount of seasoning will vary depending on how many slices you cook, but it should be about 1 tbsp of soy sauce and 1 tbsp of sugar for half a can. Continue to cook the spam on both sides until the glaze thickens. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Clean the glaze from the pan with a wet paper towel, or use a new pan to cook the eggs however you like. I love to eat it scrambled or sunny side up.
- Add white rice to a bowl and season it with furikake, then top with the spam and eggs. Enjoy!
